Spontaneous St. Louis, Day 1

Friday, December 27, 2013

It was smack dab in the middle of Christmas day when the old man and I decided to do something totally crazy.  We decided to load the truck up and drive halfway across the country.  So we stopped all Christmas festivities and began packing.  This is how the whole thing started.....

Steve's brother Mike and his family were in St. Louis visiting from Kentucky.  They tried to talk us into coming for Christmas.  We had just been to St. Louis for Spring Break and had decided we much prefer traveling there in the Spring as opposed to the Winter.  We were content to stay all warm and snuggly in our house and celebrate Christmas.  And then the Facebook posts started.  Everyone was having so much fun together.  And then on Christmas Eve Steve's sister Lisa posted that they were playing a game and someone said the word "marriage" and about 3 or 4 people said at the same time, "mawwige.  mawwige is wat bwings us togewer today."  And I was all like, "I-i-if I were there, I would have said mawwidge too!"  And then the next day my niece posted that my other niece licked her thumb and rubbed it on the others forehead and did the Lion King thing.  And then she told her it was ok to lick her forehead because they were family.  And I was like, "But I'm family too!"  So I went to Steve and asked what he thought about getting in the car right then and driving to St. Louis.  It didn't take us long to decide.  About 15 hours after we made that decision we were in the truck and on the road.

We stopped for a photo op at the Kansas City Temple.
Please keep in mind we had been in the truck for 2 days.

We arrived at Steve (Redneck) and Heather's house Friday afternoon.  We went from freezing weather in Utah to absolutely gorgeous weather in Missouri.  We were tired of sitting so we decided to go for a walk. This is literally in Steve and Heather's backyard.

If you give a Redneck a rock, you can keep him busy all day.
The river below where we were walking was frozen.  We spent a very LONG time throwing rocks at it trying to break the ice.  I'm pretty sure when it thaws out the water level will be up several feet due to the massive amount of rocks we deposited in it.

We found a rock with some fossils in it.  We were informed the type of fossil we were looking at was the official Missouri state fossil.

Addy made it her mission to arm everyone with a walking stick.

I like how this picture shows Addy in mid air.  What was she jumping down for?
She found herself a hobbit hovel.

That night Grandpa (who was unaware of our presence in Missouri) came over for dinner and games.  I showed him the new Family Search  website and we talked some Family History.  Then Heather and I gave him a Facebook tutorial.

Mike and his family had been gone all day.  They arrived home and the kids were surprised to see us there!

Reagan gave the girls the scarves she made them for Christmas.  But somehow they ended up on the boys.

Happy Birthday Henry

My adorable Nephew Henry turned 1 a few weeks ago.  He is the sweetest cutest baby!  I was able to finally meet him for the first time at Thanksgiving.  He certainly lived up to his nickname.  Happy Birthday Baby Love....Here is your Birthday Video:

Happy Birthday Lauren

My sister Lauren had a Birthday the end of December.  Lauren and my Addy and BFF's.  When Addy was little she started calling Lauren "Auntie La La".  She tells all her friends that Lauren is her Best Friend.   When Lauren was born I called her "Presh"  short for Precious (Hey, it was the 80's!).  I used to rock her to sleep every night while I sang to her.   I don't know what I would do with out Lauren.  She helps me so much.  She is my most fav-o-rite sister!   Lauren, happy late Birthday!  I love you!

Happy Late Birthday Earl

Last year I made a Birthday video for (almost) everyone in my family.  I am still 3 videos behind (sorry).  I was going to save my dad's for last, even though in order of Birthday's, his wasn't the last of 2013.  I figured he wouldn't mind.  But I decided today would be a good day to make his video and honor his memory.  It has been 6 years today since he left this world.  We went to my mothers house this afternoon and had dinner with her.  We also visited the cemetery.  My dad was certainly one of a kind.  There isn't another like him. He touched the lives of many while he was here on the earth.  And he continues to touch lives as his legacy lives on.  Shortly after he passed away, we set up a blog where people could share their memories of him. There are so many wonderful stories there.  You can read those by clicking here.  Here is his Birthday video:

A few years ago I made another video for him.  Here it is:

Snow in Utah: Thanksgiving 2013, Day 8

Friday, November 29, 2013

This was the day the Maldonado's had to leave to return home to Texas.  We all had Thanksgiving leftovers for lunch and hung out for a bit.

After lunch we headed over to my mom's house.
We took a moment to capture a few choice memories on camera.

My mom with all her grandchildren except Kristy's 3 kids.

Cute Babies!

These kids raked up grandmas leaves for her.

The next time I see this little guy, he probably won't be a baby any more!

Our final goodbyes before the Maldo's left.

Sam and Zac got busy putting up Grandmas Christmas lights.  Apparently we were having fabulous weather for the day after Thanksgiving.  I'd love some of that again.

Teresa and the girls and I set up grandma's tree and decorated it.

We kept trying to take a picture of Alaina with this Santa hat on.  She absolutely did not like it and would not leave it on her head for more than a second.  We were finally able to snap a picture while her mom held her arms down.

There are only 10 years between this Uncle and Nephew.

Sam fixing the lights we couldn't get to work, and Zac saying goodbye to Alaina.

We left my mom's house that night knowing that the next morning the Snow's would be on a plane on their way back to Ohio.  We had so much fun being together for Thanksgiving with all of our family.  We terribly missed my sister Kristy and her family who were not able to make make the journey from Virginia.  And we also missed my dad, but we know that his Spirit was present with us.  It was a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.
