Flashback/Flashforward Friday- April Joy, The Girl Who Was Named After Her Mothers First Epidural

Flashback: April's Birthday 2011
April's Surprise 30th Birthday at The Olive Garden

Flashback: April's Birthday 2012
That horrible Nicholas Sparks movie she made me go to.  I wore my PJ's for extra sleeping comfort but somehow I managed to stay awake for the whole thing.

Flashforward: April's Birthday 2013
At the Olive Garden,  celebrating Ape's Birthday two days early because she has someone better to celebrate her real Birthday with now.  We are so original with our choice of restaurants (I won't tell you that our secret society was just there a few weeks before as well).  Our waiter is in the picture with us.  He was very friendly and had a very long story to tell us every time he came to our table.  We had an extra chair at our table and I am really surprised he didn't sit down in it and eat dinner with us.  Before we ordered April and I were having one of our usual disagreements and he said something about not fighting.  April's mom said, "Oh, that's just what they do."  He said, "Oh, you must be sisters."  And we were like, "Yeah, pretty much."

After dinner we had to have dessert.  It was late so we couldn't go to April's favorite cupcake shop.     We didn't have a whole lot of options at that hour so we settled for Krispy Kreme.  And guess what?  They had no glazed donuts.  Yeah, I know.  I said something to the guy about that being illegal.  The dead silence on the other side of the intercom let me know he didn't find me humorous.  If you are wondering why we stick the Birthday girl in the backseat, well, we always stick her in the backseat.  It is her fault for being 1/4 the size of the rest of us and for having no phobias involving small spaces.

Yesterday, April's real Birthday.  We had a Relief Society thing at the church that morning and I was verbally and emotionally threatened by someone saying she wouldn't show up if there wasn't a celebration.  I didn't want to be physically threatened once I got there so I brought a cake.  We all just dug in as you can see.  Who has time for knives and forks and plates and fancy stuff like that?

I had no way of knowing the kind of kindred spirit I would find when this woman moved in down the street from me three years ago.  I feel like I have known her my whole life.  And when she is beating me up, then I really feel like I have known her way too long.  Happy Birthday April.

Monday Morning Musings - Raising Gum Awareness, One Post at a Time

So we're driving down the street with the windows open and Zac decides he is tired of his gum, so he spits it out the window.  I tell him he shouldn't do that because now someone is going to walk by and step on it.  He said that he was just trying to raise gum awareness.  He said people have walked all over gum for to long and now it is time to put a stop to it.  Gum does have feelings, by the way.  Apparently he feels like someone needs to stick up for the gum and he was doing that by spitting his gum out onto the street for all to see.  And hopefully not walk all over and abuse.  So next time you see a discarded piece of gum lying about, keep in mind that that gum has feelings too.

I seriously took part in the naming of all my children.  But for the life of me I can't get their names straight.  Ever.  Sometimes I go through all the names before I finally arrive at the correct one.  All while the offended child is staring at me like I'm an idiot.  What is really bad is when I call one of the girls Zac.  Or call Zac one of the girls names.  Or better yet, when I call Zac Sam (Sam is my little brother who is married and has a kid).  My kids get so upset and I try to explain to them that it's a mom thing, I'm not the only one who does it.  The other day after I went through my list of names before arriving at Aubrey, Aubrey just looked at me with her hands on her hips, her head cocked to the side and her eyebrows raised and said, "What do you need, like some flashcards with pictures like they use in kindergarten?"

Zac got a recurve bow for Christmas.  On Christmas day he lost an arrow in the yard in all the snow.  The snow never ever melted so he could find it.  When it finally did melt a few weeks ago, he went out to try and find it.  That is when we, along with the majority of the neighborhood, found all the vole tunnels in our yard that had been hidden all winter under the snow.  Unfortunately he could not find his arrow.  He said that maybe one of the voles came out and found it and carried it into his tunnel underground because he has seen them do that in cartoons.

I am not a good example of milk drinking to my children.  I gave the stuff up probably 5 or 6 years ago.  And I have never looked back.  Jack.  My life in the nasal department has been so much better since I gave it up.  I have been a walking sinus infection since I was a pre-teen.  I don't think I've had a sinus infection since I gave up milk.  Can I get a hallelujah?  Aubrey has now decided that she doesn't drink milk either.  I try to get her to have at least one glass of milk a day.  She does have a growing body after all.  OK, I have a growing body too, but mine is growing in the wrong direction.  Anyways.  One day I was trying to get her to drink some milk and she said, "If you want me to drink this milk, you should probably get me a cookie."

Am I the only one who never feels quite alone when I'm in the room with the XBox Kinect or my cell phone?  I just feel like there is always...someone...watching... My cell phone has a camera on the front and the back of the phone.  Convenient, huh?  I always cover the lens on the front of the phone when I'm using it.  I'm all like, HA!  Take that sucka!  It's the back side of my left thumb.  How exciting is that to watch?!?

Flashback/Flashforward Friday - Nauvoo

Flashback - October 1999
Flashforward - April 2013

I know it's not Friday, but I had plans to do this post for the last two Fridays and it just didn't happen.  Flashback Sunday just doesn't have the same ring to it, so just pretend.  In October of 1999 we were in St. Louis visiting Steve's family.  We made a quick day trip up to Nauvoo with some of his family.  In 1999, the Nauvoo Temple had not been rebuilt yet.  They had just announced earlier that year in the April General Conference that they were going to rebuild it.  Across the street from the old temple grounds they had this model of the temple.  At the time we only had one child- Zac, who had just turned two.  If some of us look miserable in the flashforward picture, it is because we were.  It was freezing!

Flashback - October 1999
 Flashforward - April 2013
The flashback picture above is what remained of the original Nauvoo Temple before they rebuilt it on that spot.  If I remember correctly, the red circle of bricks is where the original baptismal font stood.  The flashforward picture was taken right before we went into the Temple to do baptisms in that exact same spot.  In the flashback picture the kids in the background that are in the flashforward picture are Zac in the orange jacket and Josh in the blue jacket and Uncle David in the dark blue.  In the flashforward picture Josh and Zac are the 4th and 5th person from the left and David is on the right.  I looked up the dates online and it says that the groundbreaking of the new Nauvoo Temple was on October 24, 1999, so it probably happened right after we were there.

Flashback - October 1999
Flashforward - April 2013
The flashback is a picture of Zac (age 2) at Carthage Jail and in the flashforward you can see him (age 15) examining the bullet hole in the door at Carthage Jail.

Flashback - October 1999
Flashforward - April 2013
I have examined these two pictures closely and in my expert opinion I have determined them to both having been taken on the exact same spot of ground.  Look at the trees.  Some of them are not the same because I'm sure some were removed and some new ones planted.  But that big cluster of trees and the tree with the v are in both pictures.  And notice the road and the white fence in the background of both pictures.  Same spot!  In the flashback picture you have Zac, Sierra, Josh, Tyler and Amanda.  In the flashforward you have Aubrey, Reagan, Addy and Emily - a whole new crop of grandchildren who weren't even close to being born in the first picture.

Flashback - Summer 1985/86ish?
 Flashforward - April 2013

When I was probably 12 or 13  my Granny Snow took me and 3 of my cousins on a fun trip that included a stop in Nauvoo.  In the above picture you can see my cousin Shari and myself making rope.  In the flashforward pictures you can see Addy and her cousin Reagan and Zac and his cousin Asher doing the same thing.

Happy Birthday Miss T

My dear sweet niece Tia turned 10 last month.  Her Birthday fell on the very day we left to go out of town for Spring Break.  I tried really hard to do this video before we left.  But alas, I failed.  I am so sorry Sweet T that you had to wait so long.  I picked the first song in the video because we have a CD that Kristy made for Tia a few years ago with all her favorite songs on it.  We must have listened to that CD and watched the dances the girls made up to the songs a thousand times in the 2 weeks they were here visiting that summer.  They left the CD with my girls when they went home.  We have listened to it ten thousand times since.  That is the first song on the CD and every time I hear it, I think of Tia.  I love you and hope that you had a super fantastic Birthday!  Love ya, Aunt Allyson

Can't see the video?  Click here.

Monday Morning Musings - Alarming

How ridiculous is this?  Yesterday after church I went out to the van and the kids were all in there waiting.  Usually Steve is there with them and I am usually the slow one.  But this time Steve wasn't there.  So we sat and waited for a while.  Then I remembered I had something in my car I needed to take in to someone so I ran back in the church.  Just as I was coming out, the kids set off the alarm on the van.  Zac usually drives us home from church and I am guessing he was having a power trip in the drivers seat and locked the doors and then someone opened one of the doors.  The only way (that I know of) to turn the alarm off is with my key chain.  Steve usually drives us to church and he refuses to carry my big key chain, so he uses the single key (we have been locked out of the house multiple times over his refusal to carry the full key ring).  Anyhoo.  We didn't have the ability to turn the alarm off since the key ring was sitting at home in my bedroom.  And Steve was inside the church with the key.  I thought for sure if we had the key and put it in the ignition and turned the car on, the alarm would stop.

That is when I remembered that during Sunday School Steve asked me if he had given me the key because he didn't have it on his person.  This is so not like him, and I am really afeared he is becoming slightly senile in his old age.  We concluded that the key must have been left in the vehicle.  Thankfully it was.  So we tried subduing the alarm by sticking the key in the ignition.  No luck.  We tried locking, unlocking, opening doors, putting the van in reverse, putting it in drive.  All the while people in the parking lot were staring at us like we were idiots (I would have done the same thing had the roles been reversed) and there was a ward in the building still having meetings and I'm sure we were being more than distracting.  So I ordered Zac to drive, Steve or no Steve.  Yeah, we drove all the way home with the alarm blaring.  Past all the Deacons out doing fast offerings and all the families walking home.  It was great.  And not annoying at all.  We had to stop and drop Zac's friend off at his house.  We finally made it home, located the key ring with the remote and blessedly turned the alarm off.  Could there possibly be a more ridiculous design in a car alarm?  I'm really scared now because that key ring remote is pretty old.  And it has been dropped a whole lot of times.  And it is about to fall apart.  So...what happens when it does?  I have no idea.  Do you?  No, really.  Do you?

I feel so bad for little Addy.  She has a kindergarten field trip this morning and I was supposed to go with her, and she is so sick.  She has a fever and a super bad cough.  So we had to stay home.  Poor girl.  I do have to be completely honest and say I'm not too terribly disappointed that I don't have to walk around a farm with the layer of snow we woke up to this morning.  But I do feel bad for her.

We were driving down the road the other day and Zac said, "I'm not too keen on that."  And I looked at him and said, "Did you just say keen?"  And he said, "Hey!  I'm reading a book by a British author.  It's not my fault!"

This is way super old, but I have a list of musings and it has been forever since I have done them, so bear with me.  But one night when Steve was watching a football game Aubrey said, "I know the Rednecks are playing tonight, but who else is playing?"  She meant to say the Redskins.

I know I should probably be happy Emily likes to play her flute so much.  But I fear she uses it as an excuse to do nothing else.  She can't do her chores because she has to practice her flute.  And she practices it all afternoon after school.  Then it is time to get ready for bed and she doesn't have chores or homework done. So the whole flute thing is starting to get on my nerves.  But I feel bad making her stop when she enjoys it so much.  I guess I'm going to have to make a rule that she must have everything else done before she practices.  The only problem with that is she gets out of school so late and she has Young Womens and soccer or something else everyday that by the time she gets everything else done, and by the time she could practice her flute, I'm trying to get her sisters to sleep and she is trying to play.  Oh the dilemmas...

Happy Monday!

Spring Break 2013 - Day 7: Independence, Liberty, Adam Ondi Ahman and Home Sweet Home

Saturday, April 6, 2013
We left St. Louis early Saturday morning and began our westward journey home.  On the way home we stopped in Independence Missouri.  This is another important place in our church's history.  We went to the LDS Visitors Center.  During our tour we learned a little about the history of our church in Independence.    Above is a picture of Addy in a log cabin.  When the early members of our church first arrived there, many one room cabins like this had up to 10 families living in them.  Below is a picture of a recreation of the printing press WW Phelps established in Independence.  This year our family is reading the Doctrine and Covenants and just that morning as we were driving we read the section where WW Phelps is told to go to Independence to set up the printing press, so this was a rather timely visit.

Addy's bear Annie was with us every step of this trip.  She was able to spend some time with these old fashioned pioneer dolls while we were there.

We went across the street from the visitors center to see the original cornerstones for the Independence Temple.  We also got to talk to the 90 year old man from the Church of Christ who runs the visitor center there.  It was very interesting.

We were also able to take in the view of the Community of Christ temple which is also across the street from the LDS visitors center.

Then we drove to see the Liberty Jail where Joseph Smith and several others were imprisoned for 5 months.   Here is Addy admiring some flowers at the Jail/Visitors Center.

Next stop - Adam Ondi Ahman.  It was very beautiful and peaceful there.

Steve explaining to the girls the importance of this place.

After we left Adam Ondi Ahman, our sight seeing was over and it was time to put some serious mileage between us and the state of Missouri.  We were able to make it to our normal overnighting place of North Platte Nebraska.  I always think of North Platte as a freezing cold miserable place, but it was rather lovely this time of year.  We stayed in our usual hotel which is our favorite hotel ever to stay in.  I'm not sure if that is because by the time we get there we are dead tired and have been driving in the car all day or what.  They do have the very best free hotel breakfast ever.  Like for real.  It is better than any breakfast you could ever pay for.  If you ever find yourself in North Platte, let me know and I will hook you up.  Here is Addy around 1:00 AM just before falling asleep.  She has all her special friends gathered round her.

And here she is 6 hours later.

Thankfully the rest of our journey was pretty unremarkable.  We did make a pit stop at what is now the infamous spot of the forgotten cell phone incident.  As we were getting back in the van everyone checked with Zac repeatedly to make sure he had his cell phone on him.  I got a picture of the tree in which the cell phone was left that dark night 9 days earlier.

We had a blast on our trip and we loved spending time with family.  We saw and did some awesome things. It was so nice to be back home though, as it always is after being away for so long.  My dear mother and sister met us weary travelers at our house with dinner, bless their hearts.

Spring Break 2013 - Day 6: BBQ, Birthdays, Near Death Experiences, Food Comas And Rednecks

Friday, April 5, 2013
Our last day in Missouri just happened to be Steve's Birthday.  I woke up wondering what he would want to do on such a day.  It didn't take me long to decided that he would want to eat some St. Louis BBQ.  I was not opposed to this either.  I asked Steve H. and Heather if there were any local places we could go to.  They told us about 2 BBQ establishments in their town, one in an old car wash, the other in a shack in a parking lot.  Growing up in TX as I did, I am fully aware that the best BBQ does not come in fancy corporate packaging.  The best BBQ is made in car washes and shacks.  Heather looked up some info on both places so we could decided which one to go to.  On the Big Sticky's Facebook page it said something about the Health Department wanting to shut them down because they want them to move out of their shack and into a building.  That pretty much solidified in my mind where we were going!  BIG STICKY'S!  I took a picture while we were in line and I think that kinda freaked them out with everything they have going on.  Everyone in our group explained to them that that is just what it do.  I take pictures of everything all the time.

So.  Dang.  Good.  Like for real.  Some of the best brisket I've ever had.  And the cheesy potatoes?  Ohhh yeah...that was some good stuff right there.  Oh, and the baked beans with apples!  Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their lunch and amazingly none of us died from eating food from a shack.  We did all walk away stuffed and incredibly satisfied.

We went back to Steve H. and Heather's house.  The weather outside was absolutely perfect.  We all sat around in the backyard and had Grandpa tell us some stories.  He told us about his life growing up.  He told the kids some stories about their great and great-great grandparents.  Like this one - his grandmother gave birth to one of her children by herself in her home.  She cut the umbilical cord with a  butcher knife and was up and in the kitchen making dinner when her husband got home that evening.  He told us about 3 near death experiences he had in a few weeks time, right before he went into the army.  These caused him to do some deep thinking about his life (he was preparing to be a Lutheran Minister).  While he was in the army, he met a Mormon and became friends with him and they spent a lot of time talking doctrine.  Roy was having some doubts about the Lutheran doctrine.  His friend said something to him one time about how Mormons believe families can be together forever.  A close family that loved each other was something he always wanted to have, and family relationships after the grave in the Lutheran church were pretty much nonexistent.  That led him to want to speak with the Mormon missionaries.  They were able to answer all of his questions about doctrine and he was baptized.

He told us many other stories.  Like how much he enjoyed dating a lot of different women, looking for the right one to marry.  The kids loved hearing this.  They made comments like, "Oh, Grandpa was a playah!"  He told us about how he met Myrle, Steve's mother.  I loved hearing that story and thinking about how history repeats itself as their story is very similar to how Steve and I met.  It was a really nice way to spend our last afternoon together.

Zac and Tyler started building a shelter to sleep in for the night

Aubrey, who has been begging me to get bunny's ever since we got home.

Checking out the progress on the shelter.

Earlier in the week, Addy discovered the piano in Steve and Heather's living room.  The only song she knows how to play is Jolly Old St. Nicholas.  She must have played that song 5 hundred thousand times while we were there.  She learned that song from her sister Aubrey who also played it for us a few hundred times herself.  Here is Mandi blessedly teaching them another song.

Samantha came over with Josh and Meg after she got off work.  In this picture she is saying, "Hey, I just got off of work.  I'm hungry.  Don't judge me!"

Heather making dinner.  Unbeknownst to me, Emily said something to her Uncle Steve about her desire for deer meat while we were there.  So Heather made two crock-pots full of deer meat for dinner.  We all enjoyed an evening together hanging out and eating more good food.

The finished shelter

And then it was time for dinner

Heather made a HUGE batch of fried okra, one of my favorites.  I am being totally serious when I say this.  This is only about 1/2 of the okra she made.  The other 1/2, I ate before dinner was ready.  So by the time we sat down to eat, I had already eaten a whole meal consisting of fried okra.  Then I sat down and ate a whole other meal of deer roast, mashed potatoes and gravy, brussel sprouts, and about 1/2 of the okra you see below.  These are true events.  I was so stuffed!  Especially because I was still stuffed from my lunch in a shack.

I have heard people talk about food comas before, but I had never really experienced one myself.  As I sat there at the table after my Big Sticky shack lunch and my fried okra dinner and my second dinner of deliciousness, I could feel myself slipping into an actual food coma.  I had to get up and move!  I was not alone.  So I went on a lovely walk with these fine people:

While we were on our walk Heather said something to be about how she had been looking through her scrapbook magazine a while back and she saw a picture in there that she swore was my backyard.  So when we got back to her house she pulled out all her magazines and we all sat around the table looking for the picture. We never found it.  But I did gather plenty of lovely ideas for scrapbook pages.

Then it was time to sing Happy Birthday to the old man.

Steve is more of a pie person than a cake person.  He requested banana cream pie on this day.

We finished off the evening right by watching a little Duck Dynasty.  That's a fact, Jack!

Zac and Em went back for seconds of the deer roast.

Watching movies in the basement.

And then the sad moment came when it was time to say good-bye.

And, late as it was and as early as we had to get up in just a few hours, we may or may not have watched a few more episodes of Duck Dynasty before actually going to bed.
