Memorial Weekend 2012

We had such a fun weekend!  It started Friday night.  Sam and Teresa drove down from BYU Idaho to spend the weekend.  They came over to our house with my mom and Lauren and we had dinner and watched the first 2 Men In Black movies.

The next day (after I went garage sale hopping with my neighbor that morning and Steve and the kids cleaned out the garage-bless them) we all went to see Men In Black 3 in 3D.  After that we went to my moms house to eat and play games.
The kids played on the wii.
We all sat outside on the deck trying to enjoy it but we were freezing cold

We played a huge game of Skipbo and Addy acted as photographer.

While we were playing Skipbo, Teresa was showing us the shirt she was wearing that she tie dyed.  We started talking about how much fun it would be to tie dye shirts and all wear them on Memorial Day.  So we printed off a coupon for each person and went to Hobby Lobby to buy a tie dye kit and shirts.  I feel bad for all the people in line behind us, because I sent each one of my kids (even Addy) through the check out with their own 40% off coupon to buy their shirt.  Steve didn't go with us and I called him and tried to talk him into letting me buy him a shirt, but he said no and I knew he wouldn't wear it, so I didn't get him one.  A decision I regretted on Monday when we were all wearing our shirts.  Teresa said, "You never listen to him any other time, why did you listen to him this time?"  So true.  I will remember that next time!

On Sunday we all went to church.  After church, I don't know what everyone else did, but I took a luscious two hour nap.  After that everyone came over to our house and we made our shirts.  Then we played around the yard a little and then had breakfast for dinner.

There was a beautiful double rainbow in the sky
The next day was Memorial Day.  We all met that morning at the cemetery
where my dad is buried for a Memorial Service.

After we left the cemetery, we went to my mom's house where she had a fantastic bbq brisket lunch awaiting us.  It was beautiful outside so the deck was much more enjoyable that it was two days before.

After lunch we decided to go shooting.  So we all loaded into two different vehicles and headed over to our house to load up the guns.  The people in my mom's van turned down a side street right outside of our neighborhood to wait for us to get the guns and then meet them.  Right across the street from where they parked, they saw a trampoline sitting in front of someones house with a "FREE" sign on it.  So they called Steve to see if we wanted it.  He said no.  A while later my mom called my phone and said, "Are you sure you don't want this free trampoline?"  And I was like, "What free trampoline are you talking about?"  Well, needless to say, that trampoline is now in our backyard.  I do have mixed emotions about this because we had a trampoline at our old house but I sold it because my kids and all the neighborhood kids made me so nervous on it.  But I figured it was free and if I decide we made a bad decision, we can always stick it in our front yard with a "FREE" sign on it.
After the whole trampoline situation was taken care of,
we headed out to the west desert to get our red neck on.
Addy made it her mission to collect as many spent shot gun shells
as she could and place them in the door of Steves truck.

Red Neck Grandma

After we shot the place up, we headed back to my moms house for leftovers for dinner.  Then Sam and Teresa left for their journey back to Idaho and we left to put kids to bed and I took Zac and Em on a nightmarish journey for new shoes for Zac since the whole bottom of his was flapping free in the wind and a new swimsuit for Em who had a 6th Grade Swimming Field Trip the next morning.  The shoe part, not so nightmarish.  The swimsuit part.  Sigh...let's just not even go there.  I will just give you this advice: If you are in the market for a somewhat modest one piece swimsuit that isn't as thin as a piece of paper, for a girl who is right in between little girl and women swimsuits, don't put off shopping for it until 9:00 at night when she needs it by 9:00 the next morning.  Also make sure she isn't absolutely exhausted from a long weekend before you subject her to such trauma as swimsuit shopping.

Everything You Knead To Know About Dough

My brother Sam and his wife Teresa, who is with child, came down from Idaho to spend Memorial Day Weekend with us.  We had them and my mom and Lauren over for dinner tonight and a MIB marathon.  We watched the first two Men In Black movies tonight because we are going to see the third one tomorrow.      I don't think I have ever seen the second one.  I don't know why I watched it tonight.  It was one of the worst movies I have ever seen.  I got up and went to the other room to clean for the last 15 minutes of the movie because I could stand it no more.  When it was over everyone was getting ready to leave me and Steve was exhausted and couldn't stay awake.  I tried to get people to not leave because I still had an hour before I had to go pick Emily up from a late over at her friends house.  I asked them what I was going to do to stay awake if they left me and Teresa said I should blog because I haven't in a long time.  This is true.  So here I am.

On Wednesday, two days ago, we had a little neighborhood baking day.  Tish and Trish and my sister Lauren and I all went over to April and Veronica's house and Trish gave us all a lesson on making bread and cinnamon rolls.  We made them from scratch and even ground our own wheat!  Did you hear me?  We ground our own wheat!

(Please note my new haircut.  I woke up that day and thought I might literally go insane if I had to go one more minute with my hair the way it was.  So I picked up the scissors and started hacking away at it.)

Trish, the expert, showing us how to roll the cinnamon rolls

Me.  We had to take these pictures just to show that Trish didn't do all the work.
She did most of the work, but we did help.  A little.
We ended up with four gorgeous pans like this.
And four beautiful loaves of bread.  We each took our bread home to cook in our own oven so our house could smell yummy.  It all turned out fabulously delicious.  My kids were so excited to come home from school to these cinnamon rolls.  Thanks again Tricia for sharing your expertise with us!

Utah Daughter vs Texas Mother

Emily: Mom, are we in Lay'uhn?
Me: No.  We are in Layton.
Emily: Yeah, Lay'uhn.
Me: Layton.
Emily: Lay'uhn
Me: LAYTON!
Emily: LAY'UHN!
Me: LAYTON!  TON!  TON!  TON!!!!  There is a T in that word!
Emily: Yep.  We're in Lay'uhn.

It's A Hard Knock Life

Just annoying the heck outta my family as I boisterously sing along to Annie. There are just some things I simply cannot help, and singing along boisterously to Annie is one of those things. I do a mean Miss Hannigan impression, if I do say so myself. In fact just the other day I was getting mad at my kids for not doing their chores and Addy (who I wanted to name Annie but I was outvoted)(FYI I didn't want to name her Annie after the movie, but after my Great Grandmother) anyhoo, Addy said, "MOM!  You sound just like Miss Hannigan!" Youtube won't let me embed this video so click here to get your Annie on.

Our Kentucky Derby

Last Saturday, May 6th, we were able to go to our friends the Heberling's house for their annual Kentucky Derby Party.  We had such a good time.  Selina  made authentic Kentucky Hot Brown Sandwiches and virgin mint juleps.  We all chose our horses for the race.  Zac was the only one to choose the horse "I'll Have Another" and he won!

Never too old to sit on their mommas laps

Checking out the ducks in the new duck pond

We had a shooting match.  Everyone was randomly paired up.
Zac and Em were the first to try and hit their targets.

I don't have a picture of it but Steve and I were randomly chosen as shooting partners.

Aubrey and Chiler were paired up

 And Addy and Tricia

 And the winner is....TRICIA!!!
She won 10 bucks with her mad skills and her Mother's Day present (her gun).

The kids played on the zipline.
Going down it the regular way wasn't exciting enough I guess so the went upside down.

Addy preferred the swing on the zipline.

That is until it had a rather unfortunate meeting with her forehead.
She came over to me crying with an all too familiar sight of blood running down her face.  Tricia was quick to spring into action and get a butterfly bandage and she showed us how to get it on just right.  You can tell  she is the mother of a house full of boys.  Then, because Addy was so brave, Tricia gave her the $10 she won in the shooting contest.  Addy was so happy to add that whopping amount to her little stash she is saving.  After she was all fixed up Addy was talking to Lance and she started her sentence off by saying, "Every time I go to the hospital..." which caused great laughter from everyone.  Oh that poor girl!  Later that day, Emily did say that the next time she gets hurt she wants Tricia to be around.  I thought, me too!  She knew just what to do and kept us all calm.  Emily's line of thinking wasn't the same as mine however.  She wants Tricia around for the cold hard cash.

Thank you Mike and Selina for a fun day!
