We left St. Louis early Saturday morning and began our westward journey home. On the way home we stopped in Independence Missouri. This is another important place in our church's history. We went to the LDS Visitors Center. During our tour we learned a little about the history of our church in Independence. Above is a picture of Addy in a log cabin. When the early members of our church first arrived there, many one room cabins like this had up to 10 families living in them. Below is a picture of a recreation of the printing press WW Phelps established in Independence. This year our family is reading the Doctrine and Covenants and just that morning as we were driving we read the section where WW Phelps is told to go to Independence to set up the printing press, so this was a rather timely visit.
Addy's bear Annie was with us every step of this trip. She was able to spend some time with these old fashioned pioneer dolls while we were there.
We went across the street from the visitors center to see the original cornerstones for the Independence Temple. We also got to talk to the 90 year old man from the Church of Christ who runs the visitor center there. It was very interesting.
We were also able to take in the view of the Community of Christ temple which is also across the street from the LDS visitors center.
Then we drove to see the Liberty Jail where Joseph Smith and several others were imprisoned for 5 months. Here is Addy admiring some flowers at the Jail/Visitors Center.
Next stop - Adam Ondi Ahman. It was very beautiful and peaceful there.
Steve explaining to the girls the importance of this place.
After we left Adam Ondi Ahman, our sight seeing was over and it was time to put some serious mileage between us and the state of Missouri. We were able to make it to our normal overnighting place of North Platte Nebraska. I always think of North Platte as a freezing cold miserable place, but it was rather lovely this time of year. We stayed in our usual hotel which is our favorite hotel ever to stay in. I'm not sure if that is because by the time we get there we are dead tired and have been driving in the car all day or what. They do have the very best free hotel breakfast ever. Like for real. It is better than any breakfast you could ever pay for. If you ever find yourself in North Platte, let me know and I will hook you up. Here is Addy around 1:00 AM just before falling asleep. She has all her special friends gathered round her.
And here she is 6 hours later.
Thankfully the rest of our journey was pretty unremarkable. We did make a pit stop at what is now the infamous spot of the forgotten cell phone incident. As we were getting back in the van everyone checked with Zac repeatedly to make sure he had his cell phone on him. I got a picture of the tree in which the cell phone was left that dark night 9 days earlier.
We had a blast on our trip and we loved spending time with family. We saw and did some awesome things. It was so nice to be back home though, as it always is after being away for so long. My dear mother and sister met us weary travelers at our house with dinner, bless their hearts.
