When I went to the doctor this morning, I thought, why do I still come to this doctor after all these years when he doesn't listen to a thing I say?
When I heard Hillary's plan to tax gas profits, I thought, chalk another one up for communist America.
When I saw this picture, I thought, I don't care how many billions of dollars you have, who takes a picture like this with their daughter?
When Zac said to me ROTGLMBO, I thought, great the text talk has begun. BTW ROTGLMBO means rolling on the ground laughing my butt off, just in case you didn't know.
When I was driving in the car, I thought, why on earth did I teach my kids "The Song That Never Ends"?
When I took all 4 kids to the grocery store today (it was that or eat PB&J for dinner, on rolls because we have no bread), I thought, this is so pleasant, I should bring them all more often. When I saw Emily washing the cut on her finger over the top of the grapes in the colander, I thought, I guess I shouldn't have left those in the sink to drain.

I like that picture of Miley Cyrus and her dad. The other one I don't think was a good idea, but I think that one is beautiful.
At least Zac didn't say ROTGLMAO.
I would have chosen to eat PB&J on rolls over taking 4 kids to the store.
I'm with you on all you had to say. Well except I don't have 4 kids to take to the store.
I agree that the picture is beautiful, I would have posted the other one and talked about it but I didn't want child porn on my blog. It might be beautiful, but if you knew nothing about them and you saw that picture, would you HONESTLY think father/daughter? And would you take a picture like that with your dad? Not only that but now they are feigning innocence. Hello! You were having Annie Leibovitz take your pictures. What did you expect? We still listen to her CD on a daily basis around here so I don't know what difference it really makes.
And yes, I am glad it was a B and not an A.
And I, me, I did not want to eat pb&j rolls. What we did end up eating was much, much more yummy.
Just wait Britta, one of these days.....you'll be at the store with 4 too.
Ally- In response to your question would you take a picture like that with your dad?
If I could have Annie Leibovitz take my picture I would do just about anything she wanted. Really not anything, but I PERSONALLY don't think there is anything weird or wrong with the picture you posted. My answer is yes, I would take a picture like that.
Now the the other picture is another story. Would I let my sixteen year old pose for a photograph like that- the answer is no.
Ha, ha. I hate grocery shopping with kids. We actually have a store with a kiddie area where they can play while you shop. Love it.
Farrah, I thought the same thing about the text lingo.
Ok. So, sometimes I think I say too much in my thinkin' thursdays. This time I don't think I said enough. So I am going to explain more here. You looking at that picture, and me looking at that picture, we are both coming from very different places. You are looking at it as an adult who sees an artsy picture. I am looking at it as a mother of 2 young and impressionable girls who go through everyday of their lives with Hannah Montana as a part of it. There are so many "kids shows" that I do not think are appropriate for kids out there these days. Hannah Montana and her squeaky clean image is something I feel comfortable letting my kids watch. They watch it everyday. We own all of her CD's and they pretty much play on a continuous loop at our house, something else I feel comfortable about. Now granted, the picture I posted isn't the worst picture in the series, like I said I didn't want to post the others. But the picture I posted, for a young impressionable girl to see, it is very sensational (definition of sensational: Arousing or intended to arouse strong curiosity, interest, or reaction, especially by exaggerated or lurid details). And chances are pretty good that my kids will never see the pictures. But, they are going to hear about them. High school musical is another show that we watch all the time here. The characters on that show also have squeaky clean images. Well, Vanessa Hudgens took nude pictures of herself and gave them to Zac Efron. My kids never saw those pictures, but they sure as heck heard about them at school and came home wanting to know why Gabriella took pictures of her private places and showed them to Troy. So that is the problem I have with it. I can see why it wouldn't be the same for you. Just wait though, your boys are growing up and you will start to look at things differently too.
Ally- you make a very valid point.
The first thing I want to point out is those pictures are not of Hannah Montana. That is where I think parents are getting this whole thing wrong. That is Miley Cyrus. Hannah Montana is a fictional character. Children need to understand that.
I do already look at things like this through the eyes of a parent with impressionable children. That is why Gabe understands and is taught that characters on movies and tv shows are just that- characters. He knows they are played by real people who might not believe or act the same way as their character. Han Solo is not real but Harrison Ford is and he sees him in also play Indiana Jones.
Also, I think if we expect celebrities even if their "characters" have a "squeaky-clean" image to be role models for our children than we are setting ourselves up for this type of thing. We can't expect celebrities to have the same values or morals we do.
This is why I think situations like these are GREAT teaching tools for our children.
Here is a conversation I might have with Gabe on this issue: You see Gabe, you have been taught different things by your parents and you believe different things from x. Not everyone makes the same choices we make. Everyone also makes mistakes. This doesn't make them bad people. We just know better and understand more. I expect you to make different choices and act differently.
What an opportunity for you, me and everyone else out there to teach our children these things. I am not saying that you aren't by the way.
I believe we can’t completely shield our children from the bad and evil things in the world and this is something that you can expect to see more and more of in the future. We can only arm them with the ability to understand and make right choices. Because the people around them, their friends at school, and celebrities are not going to always have the same values as them.
By the way, because I didn't make it clear. I think it is sad her parents allowed this, terrible that Vanity Fair would publish such photos and disgusting that Annie Leibovitz would take photos like that of a 15 (is she 15 or 16) year old. I am not talking about the one with her dad- I am speaking of the one with her draped in a sheet.
Farrah - You make a very valid point.
You probably don't watch Hannah Montana, so you don't know that the whole premise of the show is that Miley (that is her name on the show) is a regular girl living with her father (Billy Ray Cyrus, her real father in real life) and she has a secret. The secret is that she is a pop star, but no one knows it is her. She wears a wig when she performs and goes by a different name, Hannah Montana. Disney markets her as a dual character Miley and Hannah. The CD Emily just got is from Disney with a picture of Hannah on the front and a CD with "Hannah Montana" songs in the front cover, Miley on the back with a "Miley Cyrus" CD in the back cover.
My children also understand and are taught that the characters they see on TV are fictional. I am well aware that celebrities do not have the same values and morals as I do, and I never said that they looked to Hannah or Miley as a role model.
I also think it can be a good teaching moment and we did have a very similar conversation when the whole HSM thing happened.
I am not naive enough to think that I can shield my children from the influences of the world. I can however keep those influences out of my home. They more they are exposed to those things, the more normal they appear to them. The more I can keep influences like that out of my home, the more chance I have that they will be turned off by those things when they are exposed to them in the outside world.
I usually could care less what celebrities do. This isn't just any celebrity though, and I think I have a right to my emotions over a situation that I think can directly affect my children. As I stated before though, we still watch her show and we still listen to her CD's so it's not like I am having a full blown panic attack over the whole thing. In fact I really hadn't given it THAT much thought until it turned into this whole thing.
And she just turned 15 a few months ago.
